Follow some steps to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI):
Measure your weight: Use a scale to measure your body weight in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lbs). Make sure the measurement is accurate.
Measure your height: Use a measuring tape or a height scale to measure your height in meters (m) or feet (ft). Make sure the measurement is accurate.
Convert height to meters (if necessary): If you measured your height in feet and inches, convert it to meters. Multiply the number of feet by 0.3048 to get the equivalent number of meters. If you have any remaining inches, divide them by 12 to convert them to feet and add that value to the total in meters.
Calculate BMI: The BMI formula is weight divided by the square of height. Use one of the following formulas based on the unit of measurement you are using:
If your weight is in kilograms and your height is in meters:
BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m) * height (m))
If your weight is in pounds and your height is in inches:
BMI = (weight (lbs) / (height (inches) * height (inches))) * 703
Interpret the result: Once you have calculated your BMI using the formula, you can interpret the result based on the following BMI categories:
Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
Normal weight: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
Overweight: BMI between 25 and 29.9
